Minister of Homeland Security Ken Zikhale Ng’oma says the recent brutal killings in Lilongwe City are not a threat to national security.

Ng’oma told Journalists in Lilongwe on Monday afternoon that such incidences cannot determine the status of the country’s security system.

He appealed to Malawians to assist security agencies in tracking down those connected to the murder cases.

The minister also instructed the Inspector General of Police to trace people who are saying the brutal killings are a threat to national security.

He indicated that the government has hired Zimbabwean cybercrime experts to train and equip the citizenry on ways to desist from cybercrime in the country.

But in a statement, the main opposition party Democrat Progressive Party (DPP) has expressed worry over the brutal killings.

According to the party’s Spokesperson Shadreck Namalomba, the insecurity prevailing in the country is a sign that a lot of systems are not functioning under the current administration.

Namalomba urges the government to quickly engage the police, the judiciary and other key agencies in serious dialogue to find a solution to these murder cases.

“In addition to that, we urge the government to address the economic challenges Malawi is facing because we strongly believe that some of these cases are linked to poverty and the collapse of the country’s economy,” he said.

In the past five days, about three people have been found murdered in a gruesome manner in Lilongwe and Dowa, causing alarm among Malawians.
