HSA arrested for selling office equipment at Mitundu rural hospital

Police at Mitundu in Lilongwe have arrested a 26-year-old Health Surveillance Assistant (HSA), for allegedly selling three Samsung Galaxy tablets and a bicycle belonging to Mitundu Rural Community Hospital, all valued at K2.6 million.

Speaking with 247 Malawi News,Lilongwe Police Public Relations Officer Inspector Hestings Chigalu says the suspect have been identified as Austin Majawa.


Police have since recovered all the equipment from where they were sold, at Lilongwe market and Bypass.

The suspect, who was employed in 2023 and posted to the said community hospital, was given the equipment by the environmental department in November last year for official use on data collection.

However, this month, when he was asked to bring the equipment back to the environmental office for monitoring, he failed to give account of them.

The development prompted hospital authorities to report the matter to Mitundu Police Unit.

After his arrest, Majawa, revealed to have sold the three Samsung Galaxy tablets at a combined amount of K340,000 and the bicycle at K50,000.

Austin Majawa who hails from Mgona Village, Traditional Authority Mkumbira in Nkhata-Baya, will appear in court to answer a case of Theft by Public Servant.
