“It seems the Catholics are on the rise with this one!”

By Burnett Munthali

Malawi’s Catholic Church has enjoyed a vibrant and significant weekend, marked by two key events that united the faithful and their esteemed guests in a celebration of faith, community, and commitment.

On Friday evening, St. Anthony Catholic Parish of the Archdiocese of Blantyre hosted a highly successful fundraising dinner in Chinyonga. This event aimed to support the parish’s developmental and spiritual initiatives. Adding prestige to the occasion, the Guest of Honour was none other than a prominent figure (name undisclosed). His presence underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in advancing the church’s growth.

Hardly had the excitement of the fundraising dinner subsided when the Catholic community turned its attention to another grand occasion. On Saturday, Masanjala Parish celebrated the 40th Priestly Anniversary of Father Alfred Nsope. This remarkable milestone honored Fr. Nsope’s steadfast dedication to his vocation and decades of service to the church and its congregation.

The same notable figure from the fundraising dinner also graced this joyous celebration as the Guest of Honour. His consecutive appearances at these Catholic events have prompted lighthearted remarks, with many commenting, “Akatolika akwera imeneyi!”—loosely translated as, “The Catholics are on the rise with this one!” The phrase highlights the Catholic Church’s respected position and its ability to attract high-profile support for its activities.

These events exemplify the Catholic Church’s commitment to both spiritual enrichment and community development. The fundraising dinner focused on resource mobilization for parish projects, while the anniversary celebrated a lifetime of service.

Father Alfred Nsope’s 40 years in the priesthood serve as a profound source of inspiration. Over the decades, he has served in various capacities, impacting countless lives and significantly contributing to the church’s mission. The anniversary event was filled with heartfelt tributes, prayers, and reflections on his enduring legacy.

For Malawi’s Catholic faithful, this weekend has served as a potent reminder of the church’s vital role as a foundation of faith, unity, and social progress. The consecutive celebrations not only strengthened the community’s bond but also highlighted the significance of supporting clergy and parish initiatives.

As the weekend draws to a close, Catholics across the nation are left with a renewed sense of purpose, confident that their collective efforts are making a difference. Truly, “Akatolika akwera imeneyi!”
