Following the death of Goodall Gondwe who was the Northern Region vice president for Democratic Progressive Party (DPP),some party’s district governors’ in the region have expressed their wish that party president Pater Mutharika should appoint, Jappie Mhango to replace the late Gondwe.
Speaking to local media, one of the district governor’s in Nkhata Bay, Bishop Nkhata, said they proposed Mhango’s name following a meeting they had with DPP regional governor, Christopher Mzomera Ngwira on Wednesday.
Ngwira, who on Thursday night confirmed meeting district governors in the course of this week, said the purpose of the meetings was to console each other following the death of Gondwe, but refused to comment on his governor’s proposed candidate.
Stunned, Mhango, whose name has been suggested to take over the position said, he believes that the party is still mourning the death of Gondwe, but he cannot control the governor’s thoughts.
In his comment,political analyst Victor Chipofya has cautioned DPP against handpicking people for the job, observing, “The tendency has left an undesirable stain on party president, Mutharika.”
Gondwe died in Lilongwe on August 8, 2023, at the age of 86.
