Ignore the noise, ignore the shouts that these are political arrests. If Malawi is indeed serious about stamping out corruption , the recent arrest of several leaders from DPP has long been overdue .
On Monday morning Police arrested 12 prominent figures in former regime of Democratic Progress Party (DPP), including former finance minister Joseph Mwanamveka, former Secretary to President and Cabinet (SPC) Lloyd Muhara, and former Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) Chief Executive Officer Collins Magalasi, have been arrested in connection with a colossal corruption scandal that has siphoned over US$635 million (approximately MK1.07 trillion) from public funds.
As Tonse alliance was elected overwhelmingly with Malawians giving them the mandate to eradicate corruption , many wondered why the DPP mafias who were kingpins of corruption in Malawi were roaming around free.
Malawians remember when the late Vice president Dr Saulos Chilima , standing on the podium during campaign time spoke of prisons being full of petty crime committers yet the big fishes were out there enjoying proceeds from the ill-gotten wealth.
The question over the past 4 years has been, why was the Tonse regime appearing slow in bringing these people to books?
This is why , today’s move has been applauded my made Malawians who wish the country well. And many of them are expecting even more arrests so that those who committed crimes should be brought to book regardless of if which political party they come from
