The Japanese Government on Thursday handed over MK2.5 billion worth of airport Ground Support Equipment (GSE) to Malawi Government through the Lilongwe Handling Company (LIHACO) meant to improve effectiveness and efficiency of operations at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA).
Minister of Transport, Jacob Hara, described the support as timely saying the airport was lacking essential equipment for it’s day-to-day operations.
He said Malawi Malawi is looking at the MW2063 as such this kind of development is in line with the country’s plans to boost tourism through provision of a good transport platform that will be able to handle visitors well hence the equipment will put Malawi on international standards.
Japanese Ambassador to Malawi, Satoshi Iwakiri, said the procurement of the equipment was part of a project meant to expand the terminal building at KIA.
He noted that the handover of the equipment was significant as it would improve effectiveness and efficiency of operations such as management of airplanes, cargo and passengers, especially those with special needs.
The Ambassador has since asked LIHACO to provide necessary care and maintenance of the equipment in order to sustain effective and efficient operations.
The equipment handed over includes Ambulift, Air start unit, Towing Tractor, Tow Bar, Boom Lift and Cargo High Loader which shall be used for loading and offloading aviation containers for cargo airplane.
