Kickboxing and mixed martial arts training launched in Malawi

By Twink Jones Gadama

The Malawi Kickboxing Association (Makba) has introduced kickboxing and mixed martial arts training exercises, with the inaugural event scheduled to take place on May 24 at the Blantyre Sports Arena.

According to Makba General Secretary Bright Limani, the training aims to equip coaches with advanced skills and knowledge of both kickboxing and mixed martial arts. “We would like to see our coaches and kickboxers embracing the advancements that have taken place in the game. We do not want them to be left behind,” he said.

The training, which will be conducted by mixed martial artist and kickboxing trainer Arthur Belo, is open to individuals and clubs, with a participation fee of K10,000 per individual and K20,000 per club.

Female kickboxing athletes Thlapelo Hlekule and Angie Jere have expressed their excitement about the training, saying they are hopeful it will help to enhance their skills. “We are looking forward to learning new techniques and improving our performance,” they said.

The introduction of kickboxing and mixed martial arts training in Malawi is expected to boost the sport’s popularity in the country. Makba is confident that the training will help to develop the skills of local kickboxers and mixed martial artists, enabling them to compete at the international level.

The training is also expected to promote the values of discipline, hard work, and respect, which are core to the sport of kickboxing and mixed martial arts. As the sport continues to grow in popularity in Malawi, Makba is committed to providing opportunities for athletes to develop their skills and compete at the highest level.
