Lawrence Waya, born on 25 May 1963 in the village of Mphonde in Phalombe District, Nyasaland, is a celebrated Malawian former footballer and manager. Known for his incredible talent as a striker, Waya represented the Malawi national team on the international stage and left an indelible mark on the country’s football history.
Waya began his professional football journey in 1980 with Bata Bullets, now known as FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, one of Malawi’s most prestigious football clubs. His exceptional skills and goal-scoring prowess made him a household name.
In pursuit of international experience, Waya had a brief stint in the United Arab Emirates, playing for Al Jazira Club. He later returned to Malawi and concluded his illustrious playing career with Silver Strikers, another top-tier Malawian club.
Waya’s impact extended beyond club football, as he earned over 100 caps for the Malawi national team. His appearances included seven FIFA World Cup qualifying matches, showcasing his skills on a global stage. One of his most notable achievements was winning a bronze medal with Malawi at the 1987 All-Africa Games held in Nairobi, Kenya.
After hanging up his boots, Waya pursued a career in coaching. He traveled to the United Kingdom, where he completed advanced training and earned a UEFA ‘B’ Licence, a testament to his commitment to football development.
Returning to Malawi, Waya took up the role of head coach for Big Bullets, the very team where his career began. His leadership and expertise contributed to the club’s continued success and inspired a new generation of players.
Lawrence Waya’s journey from a village in Phalombe to becoming a national icon is a testament to his talent, dedication, and love for football. His contributions as both a player and a coach have cemented his place in the history of Malawian football.
