Legal Aid Bureau opens new office in Balaka

The Legal Aid Bureau (LAB) Malawi has opened a new office in Balaka district effective February 1, 2023.

The new office is located in the same complex housing Balaka Magistrate court.

In a statement, the bureau’s Director Trouble Kalua, says the opening of the Balaka district means the now the bureau has a total of 20 offices,four regional offices in Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu and Zomba and sixteen district offices in Chitipa, Karonga, Mzimba, Nkhatabay, Kasungu,Nkhotakota, Salima, Mchinji, Dedza, Mangochi, Machinga, Mwanza, Mulanje, Nsanje, Phalombe, Thyolo and Balaka.



The LAB director also discloses that they have plans to open the offices in all the remaining districts in the country within the next three years so as to improve access to legal aid services faced by vulnerable Malawians who cannot afford private lawyers.

Established under Section 3 of the Legal Aid Act, 2011, Legal Aid Bureau Malawi is a government agency providing accessible, ethical, and high-quality legal aid services to vulnerable people in Malawi; and civic education and information about the law to the public.
