Malawi Congress Party (MCP) councillor for Chimutu Ward
Esther Sagawa,has been elected mayor for Lilongwe City Council during elections held this morning at Civic Office.
She replaces Richard Banda whose term of office has come to an end.
Sagawa got 21 votes against Felix Tsokonombwe who got 9 votes.
She will be deputised by Ruth Chingwalu, councillor for Mtandile ward.
Meanwhile, the outgoing mayor Banda has congratulated Sagawa who served as his deputy.
On the other hand, Mpira Ward Councillor, Christopher Jana, is now Zomba City Mayor, after going unopposed.
He will be deputised by Masongola Ward Councillor, Anthony Gonani, who has also gone unopposed.
Both are from the Democratic Progressive Party(DPP).
Jana has replaced former mayor, Davie Maunde and Gonani has taken over from Munilla Bakali.
This follows the lifting of an injunction by the courts yesterday, which paved the way for the polls to be conducted.
