A pressure group, Malawi First, the People First, has announced plans to hold nationwide demonstrations on August 8, 2024, to protest against new tax measures and issues surrounding voter registration and national identification registration.
The group’s leader, Bon Kalindo, made the announcement during a press conference in Lilongwe, citing the government’s failure to respond to their concerns.
Furthermore, the group is calling for the suspension of the newly introduced excise tax stamps, which they believe will negatively impact the economy and citizens.
Additionally, Malawi First, the People First, is demanding an extension of voter registration to those without national identity cards, ensuring that all eligible citizens can exercise their right to vote.
Moreover, the group is urging the National Registration Bureau to reform the identity card processes, making it easier for more Malawians to acquire them.
The pressure group had issued an ultimatum to the government, stating that they would hold demonstrations within 10 days if their demands were not met.
However, the government has not responded to their concerns, leading to the declaration of nationwide demonstrations.
Notably, this is not the first time that Malawians have taken to the streets to protest against government policies.
In the past, demonstrations have been held to protest against issues such as fuel shortages, economic policies, and electoral reform bills.
Consequently, the upcoming demonstrations on August 8 highlight the ongoing challenges and tensions between the government and civil society in Malawi.
Meanwhile, the government’s failure to address the concerns of Malawi First, the People First, has led to widespread discontent among citizens, who are eager to see changes in the country’s policies.
Ultimately, the demonstrations on August 8 will be a test of the government’s commitment to listening to the voices of its citizens.
