Malawi Gaming Authority Commends Media for Responsible Gambling Advocacy

By Shaffie A Mtambo

The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) has praised media practitioners for their vital role in promoting responsible gambling practices and dispelling misconceptions about the industry. Acting Director General Owen Chuma made the remarks during a meeting with members of the Nyika Media Club, a group of journalists from the northern region, at Mzuzu Sunbird Hotel.

MAGLA is mandated by law to regulate and license gaming institutions across the country, ensuring compliance with the law. The organization is also building partnerships with renowned gaming and lottery brands, such as Bet-way and Triple 8, as part of its strategic plan. Public Relations Officer Nancy Malata emphasized the importance of responsible reporting on the gaming industry, highlighting its significant contributions to the growth of the cultural and tourism sectors.

Malata appealed to the public to refrain from demonizing the gaming, lottery, and betting industry, instead promoting a more nuanced understanding of its benefits. She noted that the industry provides employment opportunities, generates revenue, and supports local businesses. By recognizing these benefits, Malawians can develop a more informed and balanced view of the gaming industry.

Nyika Media Club Chairperson Feston Malekezo commended the training, saying it had enlightened media practitioners on responsible reporting practices. He pledged that the media would continue to play a critical role in promoting responsible gambling practices and accurate reporting. By working together, MAGLA and media practitioners can foster a more informed and responsible gaming industry in Malawi.

The collaboration between MAGLA and media practitioners is a significant step towards promoting responsible gambling practices and dispelling misconceptions about the industry. As the gaming industry continues to grow in Malawi, it is essential that stakeholders work together to ensure that it develops in a responsible and sustainable manner.
