Man arrested for stealing national flags, poles valued at K540,000

A 22-year-oldĀ  Shadreck Medson is in police custody in Mulanje district for allegedly stealing six national flags and poles valued at K540,000 at Nkhonya during a Memorial Service for Cyclone Freddy victims in the district.

President Lazarus Chakwera presided over the event.

According to South Eastern Region Police spokesperson Edward Kabango, the poles with national flags were erected along the way to Mulanje park Stadium.

“After the function, the suspect together with his two friends who are at large stole six flags and poles all valued at K540,000,” says Kabango.

He adds that they instituted investigations and managed to arrest the suspect and have since recovered five poles with five flags.

Kabango says efforts are underway to recover the missing pole and flag and arrest the other suspects.

Medson will appear in court soon to answer theft charges.

He comes from Ngutuma Village in the area of Traditional Authority(T/A) Chikumbu in Mulanje.
