MANEPO denounces harassment of 87-year-old Mary Laini in Mulanje

By Chisomo Phiri

Malawi Network of Older Persons’ Organizations (MANEPO) has strongly condemned the brutal harassment of 87-year-old Mary Laini from Matewere Village in Mulanje District.

Laini was falsely accused of “holding rains,” a baseless claim that not only violates her human rights but also perpetuates harmful cultural beliefs that target older persons.

In a statement seen by this publication, MANEPO Executive Director, Andrew Kavala, has demanded immediate legal action, urging the Malawi Police Service(MPS) to thoroughly investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Kavala has emphasized the need for robust government action to ensure the safety and protection of older persons, particularly in rural areas.

To address the root causes of such abuse, Kavala has advocated for open dialogues within communities to dispel outdated cultural beliefs.

He has also stressed the importance of creating safe spaces where older persons can express their concerns and receive support.
