A popular musician in Mangochi who goes under the moniker Bandera has been arrested on allegation of abducting a 14 year old girl.
23-year-old Abdul-Karim Saidi was arrested on the charge contrary to Section 136 of the Penal Code.
If convicted he faces a maximum penalty of seven years imprisonment.
Bandera claimed his intention was to shoot a music video with the minor.
The minor told Police she was menstruating during the stay and claimed that no intimate activity occurred. However, the Police have referred her for medical examinations.
Mangochi Police Spokesperson Amina Daudi confirmed the arrest saying reports indicate Bandera initiated the alleged romantic relationship with the minor three months ago.
“On the night of January 2, 2025, he reportedly picked her up from Mpondas area. After driving around, the township for several hours, he took her to his house.
“When the minor refused to stay overnight, Bandera allegedly took her to a lodge, where they spent two days together,” Daudi said.
It is reported the girl’s mother attempted to contact her child due to the absence via phone several times, but her calls went unanswered.
“But later on, Bandera called the mother of the girl and assured her that her daughter was safe.
“The mother arranged a meeting with Bandera with the help of family members and when Bandera arrived, they handed him over to the police,” Daudi said.
