Mary Mount Student Ruth Tembo dies in a road accident

Ruth Tembo, a student at Mary Mount Girls Secondary school in Mzuzu has died following a road accident that involved the Scania Iriza bus that carried Mary Mount Girls Secondary school students on Monday January 2,2022.

The accident happened at Ruviri Bridge in Mzimba District.

In a statement, National Police Spokesperson Peter Kalaya confirmed of the development saying police officers are on the ground providing assistance and coordinating efforts aimed at helping victims of a road accident.

“Mzimba District Hospital has confirmed death of one student and it is treating others who have sustained injuries of various degrees,” said Kalaya in a statement.

He said thr bus, registration number SA 10038, which belongs to Paniche Logistics had 58 passengers on board.

He said of the 58 passengers, 21 sustained injuries of various degrees and were rushed to Mzimba District Hospital and Jenda Health Centre where they are receiving treatment.

” Three of the 21 students have sustained serious injuries, ” added Kalaya.

He further clarified thar preliminary investigations showed that the accident happened because the driver, Duncan Ngwende, lost control of the bus as he was over-speeding.

“The driver is among the injured but he will be charged and prosecuted.

“Efforts are being made to contact parents of the deceased student and those injured.

We will keep the nation updated on the accident, he concluded.
