The Mzuzu City Council (MCC) has announced a four-month ban on the sale of fresh green maize in the city, effective March 20 to June 20, 2025.
The decision comes after farmers from the city and neighboring districts complained about the theft of their green maize.
In an interview with 247 Malawi News,MCC spokesperson, Macdonald Gondwe, said the ban aims to prevent the theft of green maize and ensure that farmers can harvest their crops without losing them to thieves.

He added that the local structures, such as block leaders, ward development committees, and community policing members, have been empowered to enforce the ban.
Said Gondwe:”Additionally, the MCC has notified the Malawi Police Service (MPS) to be on alert and assist in enforcing the ban.”
The seasonal ban is a regular measure instituted by the council every year to protect farmers’ interests.
