Mzuzu, Malawi – Catherine Gotani Hara, Vice President of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and Speaker of the National Assembly, electrified the North with a massive rally that drew thousands of supporters. Addressing the crowd, Hara assured residents of Mzuzu that the government is committed to providing relief items to those in need. However, she emphasized the importance of equitable distribution, urging leaders to avoid favoritism and ensure aid reaches all vulnerable individuals.
Hara expressed concern over reports of leaders prioritizing their families, leaving others in dire need without support. “I have pleaded with leaders to ensure that all those in need are supported, rather than personalizing relief items,” she stated. She also highlighted issues within the Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (Admarc), calling for transparency in the distribution of maize. “I have asked the Minister of Agriculture to ensure Admarc has sufficient maize. There must be sincerity at Admarc because, in some cases, people receive 8kg when they have paid for 10kg,” she added.

In a bold statement, Hara cautioned businesspersons against exploiting the current economic challenges. She accused some traders of deliberately inflating prices to “punish President Chakwera,” urging them to act responsibly. Her remarks resonated strongly with the crowd, who cheered her commitment to addressing both economic and social injustices.
The rally underscored Hara’s growing influence within the MCP and her ability to connect with grassroots supporters. As the government faces mounting pressure to address economic hardships, her call for accountability and fairness struck a chord with many Malawians. The event not only solidified her position as a key figure in the party but also highlighted the MCP’s efforts to rally support ahead of future political challenges.
