Minister of Local Government Richard Chimwendo Banda has accused Malawi Police Service (MPS) officers for demanding hefty allowance whenever engaged to clear out vendors in the streets back to designated places.
Chimwendo raised the concern at the opening of Lilongwe City Summit.
The local government minister described the behaviour as strange saying the officers are employed to enforce the law.
He appealed to the men in uniform to do their job as stipulated under the law.
He said there is need for everyone to join hands to make Lilongwe City a better place to live.
“It doesn’t need a workshop to clear the vendors it is a straight forward issue. No need for any expert its a matter of just following the law,” he said
The summit is expected to discuss four thematic areas which include street vending, waste management, recreation and infrastructure development such as roads and buildings.
