Minister Richard Chimwendo Banda praises unity at Annual PIM Commemoration

By Burnett Munthali

The Minister of Local Government, Unity, and Culture, Richard Chimwendo Banda, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering unity and setting a positive example through active participation in the annual commemoration of the Providence Industrial Mission (PIM) legacy.

Speaking at this year’s event, Chimwendo Banda expressed deep appreciation for the PIM Church’s continued dedication to advancing the vision of its founder, Reverend John Chilembwe. “The legacy of Reverend John Chilembwe is not just a part of history—it is a guiding light for all Malawians to strive for justice, unity, and development,” he said.

The minister highlighted the event’s unique role in bringing together leaders across the political divide. Notably, Chimwendo Banda celebrated the opportunity to engage with opposition leaders, including United Democratic Front (UDF) Secretary-General Patricia Kaliati. “Today, we meet not as rivals, but as Malawians united by a shared history and common goals,” he remarked.

This sense of unity, he emphasized, is critical in addressing the nation’s challenges. “When we come together, regardless of political affiliation, we can achieve so much more for our people,” he added.

In recognition of the significance of this event, the government, through the Ministry of Local Government, contributed MWK 10 million to support the commemoration. The funds were used to facilitate the gathering and ensure the smooth running of activities.

Chimwendo Banda also applauded the PIM Church for its unwavering commitment to social and spiritual development. “The church has continued to play a vital role in community building and moral guidance, carrying forward the mission initiated by Reverend Chilembwe,” he said.

Reverend John Chilembwe, a pioneer of social justice and resistance against colonial oppression, founded the Providence Industrial Mission in 1900. His legacy as a leader and advocate for equality remains a cornerstone of Malawi’s history.

Chimwendo Banda called on Malawians to honor this legacy by promoting peace, unity, and cultural preservation. He emphasized the government’s commitment to working with all sectors, including religious institutions, to advance development and uphold Chilembwe’s vision.

The annual PIM commemoration serves as a reminder of Malawi’s rich heritage and the importance of collaboration. It also underscores the role of faith-based organizations in shaping the nation’s future.

In closing, Chimwendo Banda urged attendees to carry the lessons of the day into their communities. “Let this gathering inspire us to work together for a better Malawi. Let us continue to honor Reverend Chilembwe by building a nation rooted in unity, equity, and progress,” he concluded.

The event was attended by various dignitaries, community leaders, and members of the public, all united in celebrating a shared history and a collective vision for Malawi’s future.
