In a decisive move aimed at protecting student health and safety, the Ministry of Education has closed Mangochi Secondary School and Ahlus Sunna Foundation School and College due to severe sanitary issues and inadequate water supply. This closure follows recent reports of students being hospitalized due to diarrhea, raising urgent concerns about hygiene conditions at the schools.

Mphatso Nkuonera, the Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Education, confirmed the shutdown, stating that both educational institutions “lacked proper hygiene and sanitation measures.” Investigations conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Health revealed significant deficiencies in maintaining proper sanitary standards.

In addition to the closures, it has come to light that the Ahlus Sunna Foundation School and College has also been providing shelter for students from Area 47, Sector 2 and 5, who are similarly facing challenges related to hygiene. The ministry emphasized the importance of addressing these issues promptly to ensure the safety of all students.

The Ministry of Education has reiterated its commitment to promoting good hygiene practices and moral values in educational institutions. They urge all schools to adhere to the guidelines and regulations established to prevent future closures, which could disrupt the academic calendar and adversely affect student performance.

As work progresses to rectify the sanitation and water supply issues, the Ministry assures that the health and safety of learners remains the top priority. Parents and guardians are encouraged to stay informed and to support efforts aimed at restoring the schools to safe operating conditions.

The ministry is optimistic that once the necessary improvements are made, students will be able to return to their classrooms, ready to learn in a safe and healthy environment.
