Mission accomplished -Plot to take UTM back to DPP achieved as Kabambe snatches UTM Presidency

By Durell Namasani

It might go down as one of the greatest well executed political strategy in modern Malawi politics , as DPP plant Dr Kabambe has successfully hoodwinked UTM delegates into voting him as the new leader of the party.

Kabambe who is related to Prof Peter Mutharika had his sights in replacing Mutharika as the leader of DPP party.  After the DPP gurus felt it would politically suit them to have Mutharika stand as the candidate for the party, a strategy was quickly put in place to capitalise on the death of Vice President Saulos Chilima by having Kabambe jump ship to UTM and try to take over the presidency.

Kabambe

At the recently held convention in Mzuzu, Kabambe emerged the winner with 636 votes , a landslide victory defeating Newton Kambala, Patricia Kaliati and Matthews Mtumbuka.

It is largely expected that UTM will now go into the 2025 elections with a possible alliance with DPP where Mutharika might be the torchbearer with plans to leave the mantle to Kabambe.
