The Mpatamanga Hydropower Project, a brainchild of the Government of Malawi, has been in conception for several years. Speaking with 247 Malawi News General Manager for MHPL Tamuah Kerr says the project has made significant progress, with the technical, environmental, and social aspects nearing completion. The basic designs have been finalized, and the procurement process for the EPC contractor is underway. Environmental impact assessments have also been conducted, and consultations with stakeholders are ongoing to obtain the necessary certifications.
The project’s timeline is ambitious, with financial closure expected by December 2025. However, officials acknowledge that there are uncertainties and challenges that need to be addressed. On his remarks Khumbolawo Lungu from ministry of Energy says the project progresses, it is expected to have a significant impact on Malawi’s economy and energy security. This, in turn, will stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and improve the overall quality of life for Malawians.
