Proffessor Peter Muthalika’s Address at the DPP 2024 National Convention represents a missed opportunity for the Party President, as it could have been a platform to tackle crucial issues within the party for its revival.
His speech lacked innovation and was overshadowed by bitterness, primarily targeting the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) without offering concrete strategies for the DPP’s return to power.
He acknowledged the formidable status of the MCP as a dominant political entity, implying that the party and its allies face a formidable challenge in displacing the MCP from government.
Professor Muthalika exhibited contradictions in his discourse on economic recovery and corruption, portraying himself as a wolf in sheep’s clothing. He highlighted the paradox of a party formerly plagued by corruption now seeking incorruptible members.
It is imperative for all Malawians to recognize that Muthalika’s leadership faltered in managing critical issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic, electricity shortages, and industrial revitalization. He publicly admitted Malawi’s financial insolvency and resorted to procuring generators to sustain the nation’s energy sector.
Moreover, it is evident that he harbored a reluctance to support former President Joyce Banda’s ascension to power following the demise of his brother, the late President Professor Bingu Muthalika, revealing a deep-seated thirst for authority.
During his tenure as a minister, he demonstrated an inability to address governmental challenges effectively. Even upon assuming the presidency, he remained oblivious to the activities of his subordinates, reflecting a lack of oversight and accountability.
Peter Mutharika should be viewed as nothing more than a pawn manipulated by individuals intent on undermining the nation through their envious and malicious intentions.
