Mzuzu University (Mzuni) students have on Saturday sent a letter of apology to Nation Publications Limited (NPL) Journalist Jonathan Pasungwi, whom they assaulted during their protest against fees hike last month.

In a letter, signed by Mzuzu University Students Representative Council (MZUREC)President Lucius Banda, the students say they regret the events of 15 September, 2023 when some of them attacked Pasungwi who was on duty; took his cellphone and deleted pictures he had taken.

“As an academic institution championing the rights of students, we consider the humiliation you faced to be counter-productive to the freedom of the press which we as intellectuals ought to defend.”

The letter, copied to MISA Malawi chapter, seeks forgiveness from the media fraternity and reconciliation.

“We finally ask for your forgiveness and that the cordial relationship our institution has had with the media fraternity should nourished back to its life.”

Meanwhile, Pasungwi is yet to respond to the letter of apology.
