Private-practice lawyer Davis Njobvu is now the new president of the Malawi Law Society(MLS), having secured 373 votes against Mercy Chijere’s 170 at the annual general meeting held on Saturday March 29,2025 in Mangochi.
He takes over from Patrick Gray Mpaka who did not contest having served his two terms from 2021 to 2025.
During the same elections,McHarven Ngwata was elected unopposed as vice chairperson, and Francis M’mame took the role of secretary, defeating Oscar Taulo.
Other key positions were filled by Kizito Kumwenda as treasurer, Felisters Francisco, Grace Thindwa, and Innocent Chirwa as executive committee members, and Christopher Masanje, Barney Semphani, and William Chibwe Jr as regional chapter representatives.
In his acceptance speech, Njobvu pledged to lead the MLS for the next two years, working towards its goals and aspirations.Â
He expressed his commitment to serving the legal profession in the country.
Njobvu hods a Bachelor of Laws, LL.B. (Hons.) obtained in 2000 from the University of Malawi (UNIMA),from Chancellor College.
Over a period of 24 years,Njobvu has represented a wide range of local and international clients, contributing to their success by providing strategic advice and effective representation.
He has handled high-risk and complex cases across diverse areas of law, including taxation, cross-border trade, commercial, corporate, employment, public/administrative, and criminal law.
Njobvu has handled cases in all courts in the country up to the Supreme Court of Appeal and arbitration in the United Kingdom and India.
Under his guidance, numerous clients have avoided potential liability and have successfully prosecuted civil and criminal cases.
Njobvu is also well-versed in negotiations and transactional work.
He has attended Advocacy and Trial Techniques seminars and training courses within and outside Malawi.
MLS is an umbrella body of all lawyers in Malawi and was established in 1965.
