Renowned Malawian writer and social commentator Onjezani Kenani has taken to his Facebook page to express concern over the apparent lack of progress in the investigation of allegations of misconduct against Justice Kenan Manda. In a post dated 13 October 2024, Kenani referenced a recent memo from the Malawi Law Society (MLS), which sheds light on the ongoing matter.
The memo, dated 13 October 2024, reveals that the MLS sent a confidential document to the Chief Justice on 30 April 2024, outlining its position on the serious allegations leveled against Justice Manda. According to the memo, the Chief Justice acknowledged receipt of this communication on 7 May 2024. Despite this, Kenani points out that no action has been taken to address the allegations, raising concerns about the delay in responding to such a critical issue.
“Looks like so far no action has been taken,” Kenani noted in his post, highlighting what many see as a troubling lack of accountability in Malawi’s judicial system. The allegations against Justice Manda, though undisclosed in detail, are reportedly serious enough to warrant the MLS’s direct involvement and communication with the highest judicial office in the country.
Kenani’s post has drawn attention to the need for transparency and prompt action in cases involving the judiciary. As one of the country’s prominent social commentators, Kenani’s views often resonate with a broad spectrum of the Malawian public, many of whom are calling for reforms to ensure the integrity of the legal system.
The memo from the Malawi Law Society serves as a reminder of the need for justice to be not only done but also seen to be done. Kenani’s remarks are likely to increase pressure on the Chief Justice and other judicial authorities to address the allegations swiftly and restore public confidence in the judiciary.
The public now awaits further developments in the case, as the lack of action has already sparked discussions about the effectiveness of oversight mechanisms within Malawi’s legal system. Kenani’s post serves as a timely reminder of the importance of accountability at all levels, particularly within institutions tasked with upholding justice.
