President Lazarus Chakwera has committed K225 million from the proceeds of the 2023 Presidential Charity Initiative Golf Tournament towards the reconstruction of Mpatsa Primary School in Nsanje District. The school was severely damaged by Tropical Cyclone Freddy, disrupting the education of 2,494 learners and 33 teachers. Among the affected students are 14 learners with special needs due to visual impairment.
On Wednesday, President Chakwera visited the site to inspect the damaged structures before officially launching the construction of new buildings at a site provided by local community leaders. The project aims to restore educational services for the learners and teachers, ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment.
During the event, President Chakwera emphasized the importance of education in the country’s long-term development goals, particularly under Enabler #5 of Malawi’s Vision 2063, which focuses on Human Capital Development. He highlighted that initiatives like these are critical in addressing issues within the education sector and enhancing the nation’s ability to build relevant human capacity.
“I am even more resolute to continue with this initiative, for it addresses pertinent issues in the education sector, which is critical in developing the human capacity necessary for Malawi’s long-term development,” Chakwera stated.
The rebuilding of Mpatsa Primary School is expected to significantly benefit the local community and strengthen the education system in Nsanje District, offering hope for recovery after the devastating effects of Cyclone Freddy.
