President Lazarus Chakwera will return home tomorrow, Tuesday, 14th March, 2023 from his foreign trip to attend to the disaster that has befallen the country especially in some districts of the Southern Region following the hit by Tropical Cyclone Freddy.
Meanwhile, President Chakwera has declared a state of disaster in 10 districts of the southern region namely: Blantyre, Nsanje, Chikwawa, Chiradzulu, Mulanje, Mwanza, Neno, Thyolo, Phalombe, and Zomba for being worst affected by Cyclone Freddy.
Through a Press release signed by Secretary to the Office of President and Cabinet, Ms. Colleen Zamba, President Chakwera has noted with grave concern the devastation that the Cyclone is currently bringing to most districts in Malawi’s Southern Region.
Reads part of the Press Release from his office; “His Excellency has exercised the powers vested in him under Section 32(1) of the Disaster Preparedness and Relief Act (Cap 33:05 of the Laws of Malawi) and declared a state of disaster in the southern region of Malawi”
Further, President Chakwera has ordered the deployment of Malawi Defence Force soldiers to the southern region for logistical support in all the affected areas.
For the past few days, many districts in the southern region have been receiving continuous heavy down pours which have claimed lives of people and livestock, and left many people destitute.
