President Lazarus Chakwera’ Golf Tournament Initiative towards supporting needy and deserving students in various tertiary institutions in the country has been officially launched on Saturday, October 8,2022 at Lilongwe Golf Club in the capital Lilongwe.

The charity tournament which was initially estimated to raise K200 million has so far received overwhelming support, and has thus far hit K280 million to the delight of President Chakwera.

Writing on his official page on Facebook, President Lazarus Chakwera said; “My sincere gratitude to the golfing community in Malawi for your support towards the Presidential Charity Initiative. The inaugural golf tourney was awesome. K280 million raised thus far.”

But speaking during the launch at Golf Club, President Chakwera congratulated all winners of the inaugural tournament.

“Notwithstanding, the most important thing to remember is that there is a sense in which you are all winners today, because this is not just an ordinary tournament, but a tournament with a noble and national cause. By simply participating in this event, you have won hundreds of millions of kwacha for charity.

Your contribution to this cause has won shelter for Malawians who lost their homes to the devastating cyclones that ravaged large parts of our country. Your contribution to this cause has won meals for desperate individuals whose fields were destroyed by drought or flooding.

Your contribution to this cause has won tuition and upkeep for hundreds of needy students in our universities.

These victories are greater than winning any trophy, for they are victories for the nation and others, not for self.” Added President Chakwera.

The initiative according to President Chakwera is aiming at raising funds to support needy and deserving students in various tertiary institutions for attainment of quality education, and also to support citizens who have been affected by natural disasters over the past couple of years.
