Soccer star Temwa Chawinga named Freshwater Project International brand ambassador

Freshwater Project International (FPI) has unveiled US-based Malawian women’s football star Temwa Chawinga as its freshwater brand ambassador.

In a press release, FPI Executive Director Heid Rickels says Temwa’s extraordinary journey from her rural village in Malawi to the world stage of women’s professional soccer mirrors the strength and resilience that it strives to foster within communities, schools and health centres.

Born on September 20, 1998,Temwa is a Malawian professional female footballer who plays as a forward for the Kansas City Current of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and the Malawi national team.

She previously played for Swedish club Kvarnsvedens IK and Chinese club Wuhan Jianghan University.

She scored 51 goals for Wuhan Jiangda in all competitions last year.

She won the golden boot in the Chinese Super League with 30 goals.

Temwa was also the top scorer in the Chinese National Cup with 15 goals and won the Chinese FA Cup top scorer award with six goals.

The forward also won the Cosafa Women’s Championship golden boot with nine goals after inspiring the Scorchers to the title.
