Theft of Computers at Phalombe Secondary School Hinders Progress in Digital Learning

By Elywin Chighali Mhango

In a significant blow to the advancement of digital education in Malawi, the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has reported the theft of 15 computers from Phalombe Secondary School. The computers were originally donated by the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) as part of the Connect a School Project, which aims to enhance digital learning across the country.

Public Relations Officer for the ministry, Mphatso Nkuonera, confirmed the theft during an interview on Thursday, expressing deep concern over the impact this incident could have on the ministry’s broader efforts to modernize education. Nkuonera emphasized that this theft represents a setback in the shift from traditional teaching methods to a more technology-driven approach.

“This theft is a serious setback because it undermines the journey towards digital learning,” Nkuonera stated. He explained that the timing of this incident is particularly unfortunate, as the ministry is currently focused on distributing tablets to primary schools through its six-year flagship initiative, the Building Education Foundations Through Innovation and Technology (BEFIT) program, which is set to conclude in 2029. The tablet initiative aims to support early grade learners, especially those in standards 1 to 4.

Nkuonera urged communities around schools in Malawi to take an active role in protecting educational resources. He highlighted the importance of collaboration between the public and educational institutions to prevent such occurrences in the future.

The ministry has reported the theft to local law enforcement in Phalombe, and investigations are underway to determine how the computers went missing. Nkuonera assured the public that updates will be provided as new information emerges.

As Malawi strives to enhance its educational framework through technology, incidents like this pose significant challenges to ongoing efforts. The ministry remains committed to promoting digital learning and urges all stakeholders to work together to safeguard valuable educational tools.
