Hamphreys Minandi scored the winner as Red Lions boosted their survival hopes with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ekwendeni Hammers on Wednesday afternoon at Balaka Stadium.

Minandi connected with a header a well-taken free-kick by Zikhole Ngulube in the 55th minute to hand the Zomba-based soldiers a vital win in their battle against the drop.

The visitors tried to push for an equalizer but Red Lions defense proved too solid for Ekwendeni Hammers’ strikers.

Despite the win, Red Lions remain in relegation zone with 28 points, level with fellow soldiers Moyale Barracks who are on position 14 but the Lions of Kaning’ina have a superior goal difference.

Ekwendeni on the other hand are on position 13 just two points away from the drop zone.

Elsewhere, an early goal by Maxwell Paipi was enough to grant Silver Strikers maximum points as they beat Chitipa United 1-nil at Karonga Stadium.

The win for the central bankers has helped them to consolidate their third position as they have now accumulated 50 points from 27 games while Chitipa are perched on position 4 with 44 points.

Defending champions, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets remain top on the log table with 53 points while Extreme FC are anchoring the log table with 18 points.
