Two motorcycle riders have died after being involved in a head-on collision road accident in Dowa.
Dowa police Publicist Alice Sitima identified the two as Sameel Bangira Karim, a Pakistani national, and Chisomo Damiano.
Sitima says they were riding motorcycles from different directions before colliding at the Chezi Turnoff-Dowa Boma road at Kasawa Village.
“Bangira Karim, was riding a BMW motorcycle bearing the registration number BZ 5519 travelling from Chezi Turn-off towards Dowa Boma while Chisomo was coming from the opposite direction.
“Upon arrival at Kasawa Village, Karim attempted to overtake another motorcycle while negotiating a left corner and collided head-on with an unregistered Lifan motorcycle which was being
ridden by Chisomo Damiano with a pillion passenger on board,” said Sitima.
Karim reportedly sustained a fractured left leg and right arm, and a deep cut on the head while Damiano suffered internal injuries.
Sitima adds Damiano was pronounced dead upon arrival at Dowa District Hospital and Karim along and the passenger was later referred to Kamuzu Central Hospital where the former died while receiving treatment.
Left-turn accidents are some of the most common types of motorcycle accidents. A left-hand turn accident can occur when an oncoming motorcycle is struck by a vehicle turning left. These types of crashes can take place at intersections, corners, or stop signs.
Super-sport bikes are the fastest and the most dangerous motorcycle types to control. IIHS statistics show 1,169 fatalities involving this bike type in 2021, accounting for 20% of all motorcycle fatalities, despite making up only 6.3% of registered motorcycles!
