What a leader in Chakwera, pardons two prisoners for being selected for University

Malawi President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has demonstrated rare generosity towards two prisoners who excelled in the 2022/23 Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) and earned themselves a place in public universities.

In exercise of the powers vested in him according to section 89 subsection 2 of the Malawi Constitution, the President Lazarus issued the pardon via Ministry of Homeland Security.

According to the press release issued by the ministry, President Chakwera has pardoned the two in his quest to see that the right to education is accorded evenly to every Malawian.

It reads:”The Ministry of Homeland Security wishes to inform the General Public that it has pleased His Excellency Dr.Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera to exercise his powers as accorded to him under section 89 (2) of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi to Grant pardon to two prisoners who have been selected to public universities to continue with their studies and ensure their right to education”

As per the communication, the President has arrived at the decision of pardoning the two on recommendations from the Presidential Advisory Committee on Granting pardond to convicted Prisoners which noted that the two had demonstrated good behavioural reform as they were serving their sentences.

The two have been selected to the Malawi University of Business and Applied Science and Mzuzu University. President Chakwera’s gesture is an indication of his commitment to giving people chance to reform and have a right to education.
