Woman in police custody for killing unborn baby

A 33-year-old Mariam Sanudi from Chengondo village in the area of Traditional Authority(T/A) Kasumbu in Dedza is in police custody at Lumbadzi police station in Lilongwe for allegedly killing her unborn baby.

Lumbadzi Police Station Public Relations Officer(PRO) Sergeant Felix Kwinyani has told us that Sanudi is suspected to have performed the evil act as she was seen pregnant for the past 8 months.

According to Kwinyani, Elderly people in the village became suspicious as they saw her behaving as if she had given birth, hence reported the matter to police.

After interrogating the suspect, she admitted to have done the act and dumped the unborn baby along the Lumbadzi river.

Lumbadzi Health Centre’s postmortem results indicated that the death of the child was caused by forced labour.

The suspect will be taken to court very soon to answer the offence of killing an unborn child, contrary to section 231 of the Penal code.
