World Bank lauds Chakwera administration for expanding electricity access

World Bank Managing Director, Anna Bjerde, has commended the President Lazarus Chakwera-led government for its efforts in increasing electricity access from 12% to 25% over the last four years.

She made the remarks on Monday during the signing ceremony of a $300 million compact with the World Bank, aimed at supporting Malawi’s goal of achieving universal energy and electricity access by 2030.

Bjerde emphasized the importance of collaboration between the World Bank and the Malawi government in increasing access to electricity, highlighting that many African countries face significant electricity shortages.

In his remarks,President Chakwera reiterated his administration’s commitment to connecting 75% of Malawians to electricity by 2030.

“In the last four years, we have successfully increased electricity access from 12% to 25%, and we recognize the critical role electricity plays in driving economic development,” he said.

The grant is part of the Accelerating Sustainable & Clean Energy Access Transformation (ASCENT) initiative.
