Inspector General (IG) of Police Merlyne Yolamu has expressed concern over the rising attacks on police officers and vandalism of police property in the country.
Speaking at a New Year’s gathering for senior police officers in Lilongwe on Friday, Yolamu revealed the disturbing statistic that eight police officers lost their lives in 2024 while on duty.

Yolamu attributed these tragic incidents to public attacks during riot control and deliberate hit-and-runs by motorists at traffic checkpoints.
She emphasized the need for Malawians to report any misunderstandings with on-duty officers to senior police authorities, promoting amicable resolutions and de-escalating public-police conflicts.
Her concern comes amid a backdrop of tensions between law enforcement and the public.
