Minister of Youths and Sports Uchizi Mkandawire, says hooliganism has no space as far as development of Malawi football is concerned.

Hon Uchizi Mkandawire was speaking at Bingu National Stadium (BNS) on Tuesday, 26th September, 2023 when he alongside senior Government officials toured the facility in order to appreciate the extent of damages made following hooliganism which took place last weekend.

During the tour, Mkandawire condemned the acts saying those behind the acts should be investigated.

Speaking when he inspected the facility to assess the damage caused, Mkandawire said was worried about the behavior of vandalizing facilities when there are misunderstandings.

“This facility is very expensive and important to the nation. The government took loan to construct Bingu National Stadium, and as we are destroying this facility, we have not yet finished repaying the loan we used in its construction. The seats are not locally found, meaning we need to import them. This behavior is retrogressive as far as development is concerned”said the Minister.

He further expressed worry as the facility is currently, the only approved stadium to host international games in the country.

The stadium was destroyed in the late minutes of the match involving Silver Strikers of Lilongwe and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers of Blantyre in Airtel Top 8 quarter final-first leg on Saturday, 24th September, 2023 when referee controversially awarded a goal to the home team.
