The National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCM) has urged youth-led organizations in the country to take a proactive approach towards sustainable development by establishing their own enterprises.
Speaking during a meeting with Youth Response for Social Change (YRSC) at Nayuchi in Machinga district on Tuesday, NYCM Executive Director(ED) Rex Chapota stressed the importance of self-sufficiency, citing the challenges posed by donor fatigue.
He emphasized that self-reliance is crucial for the long-term viability of youth-led initiatives.
Chapota assured the youth that the government is committed to their development, highlighting a significant increase in youth funds to 2.7 billion kwacha, a 600% rise from the previous five years.
On her part, Programs Manager for YRSC,Prisca Inani, expressed her organization’s commitment to fully utilizing the opportunities offered by the Council and contributing towards Malawi’s 2063 agenda.
“Our organization is well prepared to bring change in our communities,” she said.
YRSC is currently implementing a four-year project, Social Transformation for Ending Child Marriages in Machinga district, funded by USAID, which has already nullified 193 child marriages.
